The best sleep masks for how you sleep

Three unbranded sleep masks on a linen sheet: a flat padded mask, a contoured mask with molded eye cups, and a bead-filled weighted mask

The best eye mask for sleep is the one still on your face, still dark, at 4am. That depends less on the brand than on how you sleep. A mask that suits a back sleeper can lift off a side sleeper's cheek. A mask that suits side sleepers can brush long lash extensions. So this guide is sorted by need, not by a single winner.

Before you read on: DOZZI makes one of these masks, a flat cotton one. It appears below only where a flat mask genuinely fits, which is side and stomach sleeping, travel, and breathable fabric. For lash extensions, a contoured cup mask is the better choice, and we say so in that section.

How this guide was put together

We don't buy or test other brands' masks, so nothing here is ranked by hands-on use. Each section starts with what matters for that need and which type of mask suits it, then names one or two real products as examples.

Product details come from each brand's own product page, read in September 2026. Prices are in US dollars, before shipping, as of September 2026, and they change. Where a publisher's view helps, we cite GQ's April 2025 guide to sleep masks, which we read in full. When a brand's page makes a claim, we say it's the brand's claim.

The short answer

  • Side or stomach sleeper: a flat padded mask, or a contoured mask built with side sleeping in mind.
  • Back sleeper: a contoured mask with molded cups.
  • Lash extensions: a contoured mask with deep cups.
  • Travel: a flat mask that folds into a pocket.
  • Hot sleeper: breathable fabric against your skin, and less foam.
  • Weighted: for falling asleep, mostly on your back.
  • Budget: spend on the one problem you actually have.

Best sleep masks for side sleepers

What matters. When you lie on your side, one half of the mask is pressed between your face and the pillow. Anything raised on that side gets pushed. A cup can shift, the edge lifts at your cheek or nose, and light comes in.

Which type suits it. A flat padded mask has nothing to push back, so it tends to stay where you put it. Stomach sleepers have the same problem with more pressure, and a flat mask is usually the simpler answer for them too. Some contoured masks now shape their cups for side sleeping, which is worth knowing if you like the feel of cups. Our guide to how to choose for side sleeping goes further.

Examples.

  • DOZZI Sleep Mask, ours. It's flat, with no eye cups, weighs about 44 grams, and has a ribbed, shaped panel that sits in the gap beside your nose, where flat masks usually leak light. The strap wraps all the way round and closes with hook-and-loop, so there's no buckle at the back of your head. More on why in a flat mask for side sleepers.
  • Manta PRO Sleep Mask, $85 to $89 as of September 2026. Manta's product page says its C-shaped eye cups are designed for side sleeping. GQ named it the best blackout mask, and noted that the C-shape leaves the outer edges free of foam.

For back sleepers

What matters. If you lie still on your back, the pillow never touches the mask. What's left is how well the edges seal against your brow and cheekbones, and whether you mind anything resting on your eyelids.

Which type suits it. This is where a contoured mask does its best work. Two molded cups arch over your eyes, the rim rests on the bone around them, and nothing touches your lids. If you're weighing the two shapes, our guide to contoured vs flat masks goes through the trade-offs.

Examples.

  • Manta Sleep Mask, $39 as of September 2026. Manta's original contoured mask, with an adjustable fit and "zero pressure on eyelids or lashes," in Manta's words. It's among the most widely known contoured masks. If you're wondering whether Manta is worth it, that post goes deeper.
  • Nidra Sleep Mask, $29.99 to $31.99 as of September 2026. A 3D contoured memory-foam mask that, according to Nidra's page, weighs about 1 oz and comes in Standard and Small sizes. The small size is a thoughtful touch if most masks sit too wide on your face. For more options, see MZOO and other contoured masks.

For lash extensions

What matters. Clearance. With extensions, you want the fabric kept off your lashes entirely, all night, including when you turn over.

Which type suits it. A contoured mask with deep cups. This is the one need where a flat mask, ours included, isn't the right answer. DOZZI's padding rests lightly on closed eyes. For most people that's fine. For long extensions, a cup gives you room.

Examples.

  • Slip Contour Sleep Mask, $79 as of September 2026 for the black version. Slip says it was designed with eyelash extensions in mind, with a silk outer and a foam contour inside. Its page also says plainly that it may not suit every lash length or type, which is an honest thing for a brand to print.
  • Manta SILK Sleep Mask, $75 to $79 as of September 2026. Manta lists adjustable ¾-inch-deep eye cups covered in mulberry silk.

Lash length and styling vary, so ask your lash artist what they'd use. There's more in which mask to use with lash extensions.

For travel

What matters. On a plane you sleep upright or reclined, with your head against a headrest or a window. The mask has to stay put when you turn your head, pack small, and go on and off easily in a cramped seat.

Which type suits it. Flat masks fold into a pocket and come out the same shape. Contoured masks hold their shape, which is good on your face and less good in a carry-on. A strap that closes all the way round is easier to adjust in a seat than a thin elastic.

Examples.

  • DOZZI Sleep Mask. It folds flat, weighs about 44 grams, and the wrap strap adjusts to different head sizes. We cover the rest of the routine in a travel sleep mask.
  • Matador Blackout Sleep Mask, GQ's travel pick. GQ liked that it packs into its own pocket, and noted it stayed put better upright than lying flat in bed, which suits a plane seat.

For hot sleepers

What matters. What touches your face all night. Dense foam holds warmth close to the skin, and a strap pulled tight makes it worse. If you run warm, the fabric on the skin side matters more than anything else.

Which type suits it. A mask with a breathable fabric against your skin and less foam: cotton or silk flat masks, or contoured masks with ventilated materials.

Examples.

  • DOZZI Sleep Mask. 95% cotton, 5% spandex, padded where it rests. The skin-facing fabric breathes and absorbs moisture instead of holding it against you. It's breathable cotton, not a cooling fabric.
  • Manta PRO Sleep Mask. Manta lists ventilated materials in the PRO, which is its answer to foam running warm. Manta also sells a COOL mask ($49 as of September 2026) built around cooling, which is a different job from breathing well all night.

Weighted masks

What matters. A weighted mask adds gentle pressure over your eyes and forehead. Some people find it calming as they fall asleep. It's a different tool from a blackout mask: the weight is the point, and light blocking can come second.

Which type suits it. Weighted masks work most naturally on your back, since the weight rests on your face. Strap-free designs drape rather than fasten. GQ, reviewing its weighted pick, said side sleepers may want to skip it, because lying on the beads felt awkward.

Examples.

  • Nodpod Weighted Sleep Mask, $38 as of September 2026, or $68 in silk. Strap-free, filled with beads, and 9 oz according to Nodpod's page. Nodpod gives a side-sleeping method, and says openly that it's meant to help you fall asleep, not to stay on all night. That's useful to know before you buy, and more candid than most.
  • Manta WEIGHTED Sleep Mask, $49 as of September 2026. It's adjustable, and Manta says the pressure sits around the eyes rather than on them and that it suits any sleep position.

DOZZI isn't weighted. If you want to compare the options, see Nodpod and weighted alternatives.

Silk masks

What matters. Silk is smooth, light and slippery, which many people like against the skin and hair. Silk masks come flat or contoured, so decide the shape first by how you sleep, then the fabric.

Examples. Slip's flat silk Sleep Mask is $72 as of September 2026, and Slip says both the filler and the inner liner are silk. Manta's contoured SILK mask is above, under lash extensions. GQ's overall pick was a silk mask too, the Dream Recovery Performance Silk. Silk usually needs gentle hand washing, so check the care label. We compare more in silk mask brands compared.

Masks with sound built in

If you fall asleep to audio, a few masks hold thin speakers over your ears. Manta's SOUND mask is $159 as of September 2026, connects over Bluetooth, and uses the same side-sleeping C-shaped cups as the PRO, according to Manta.

On a budget

What matters. Spend on the one problem you actually have. A plain flat mask covers the basics. Pay more when you need something specific: cups for lashes, ventilation for heat, a shape that works on your side.

Examples.

  • Alaska Bear Silk Sleep Mask, GQ's budget pick, a mulberry-silk mask that GQ notes has a wide adjustable strap.
  • Nidra Sleep Mask, from $29.99 as of September 2026, one of the lower-priced contoured masks from a dedicated brand.

If you want a spare for a travel bag, multi-packs often cost less per mask. DOZZI sells 2- and 3-packs, and you can mix Apricot and Black. Fit is personal, so check the return policy too. DOZZI's is 30 days: email us for a refund and keep the mask.

How to choose the best sleep mask for you

  1. Start with your sleeping position. Mostly back: contoured is easiest. Side, stomach or restless: flat, or cups shaped for side sleeping.
  2. Decide how you feel about your eyelids. If any contact keeps you awake, or you wear extensions, choose cups.
  3. Check the nose. On most masks, light gets in beside the nose. Look for a nose flap, a shaped nose panel, or a contoured rim that sits low there. There's more on why masks leak light at the nose.
  4. Look at the strap. Wide and adjustable beats thin elastic. A buckle at the back is uncomfortable to lie on.
  5. Pick the fabric. Cotton and silk breathe, and foam holds warmth.
  6. Read the care label. Some masks can go in the washing machine in a mesh bag, and others need hand washing. DOZZI is hand wash only.

Sleep mask types side by side

By type FlatLike DOZZI ContourMolded eye cups BeadsWeighted mask
Best position Mostly back Back, and some suit side
Flat on a pillow No, the cups push back The beads shift
Off your lashes Yes No
Travel Holds its shape Folds, but heavier
Warmth Foam can feel warm Depends on the fabric
Light gets in At the edges when you turn At the sides

Masks differ by brand. This compares the three shapes, not specific products. Silk is a fabric rather than a shape, so a silk mask behaves like the flat or contoured column it matches, and tends to breathe better than foam.

What a mask does for sleep, and the downsides

For most people, a mask is a simple way to make the room darker. In a 2023 study published in the journal Sleep, 94 adults aged 18 to 35 wore an eye mask every night for a week, and spent another week with light not blocked. After the week with the mask, they did better on a memory test and on alertness. The study didn't compare types or brands. It does suggest the darkness has to last the night, which comes back to fit.

The downsides are mostly about fit and care: pressure from a strap pulled too tight, warmth from dense foam, and skin irritation from a mask that isn't washed. If you have an eye condition, or your eyes feel sore or irritated after wearing any mask, stop and check with an eye doctor.

Questions people ask

What is the best eye mask for sleep?

The one that suits how you sleep. Back sleepers often do best in a contoured mask. Side and stomach sleepers usually do better in a flat padded mask with a good seal at the nose. If you wear lash extensions, choose deep cups.

Is it good to wear eye masks while sleeping?

For most people, yes. A 2023 study linked a week of mask wearing to better memory and alertness in young adults. Keep it clean and the strap snug rather than tight.

What are the downsides of wearing eye masks while sleeping?

Pressure if the strap is too tight, warmth if the mask is dense foam, and skin irritation if it isn't washed often. A mask that slips at night also stops helping.

Do doctors recommend sleep masks?

We can't speak for your doctor. Research on masks in general is encouraging, like the 2023 study above, but it isn't a medical recommendation. If you have an eye condition, a sleep disorder, or ongoing trouble sleeping, ask a clinician rather than relying on a mask.

Which sleep mask is best for side sleepers?

A flat padded mask, because there's nothing to push into the pillow. If you prefer cups, look for a contoured mask whose cups are shaped for side sleeping, and check how it fits at your temple.

If you sleep on your side, turn over a lot, or want a mask for travel, start with a flat one and check what it does at the nose. If you sleep on your back or wear lash extensions, a good contoured mask is worth it.
